A Christmas Visitor

Just as we were sitting down to Christmas Dinner, a neighbor called to say a moose was trying to climb the steps to our deck. It wasn't...but was very close....just rotating a tree approx. 5-8 ft from the side of the deck to nibble tree bark. Was a really big fellow who stayed around for hours sampling several trees in our side yard before wandering up the road about dark to another neighbor's trees.

Am wondering where the pair of youngsters went. They haven't been around for several weeks.

We've passed Winter Soltice and the daylight pendulum has ever so slowly started to swing in the other direction. December brought record wind and snowfall. Five wind storms had gusts topping 80 mph. This doesn't usually happen until Spring months. Neil has almost filled up our usual snow dump areas. Had a neighbor bring a huge rubber-tired monstrosity (with a bucket big enough to get our front porch into) and shoved the snow disposal sites back further to make room for more. It's been sifting down lightly but steadily for 5 days this time. Will soon need him to bring the rig back and shove the piles back further.

LITTLE WILLY RIDES AGAIN !! Report of Little Willy's demise was premature. He has risen from the ashes...er snowbank...to plow another day. Neil was letting his bad leg (the left one) rest on the clutch and almost burnt it out - causing it to slip really badly. He has strength enough in that leg to push the clutch in; but cannot lift it on it's own power. So now, he has attached two bungie cords to bring the pedal back up after he pushes it down. One of his buddies is coming over next week to help him put in a new clutch.

Still plan on looking for a tracked snow thrower (not a riding one tho) after the holiday shopping frenzy subsides for doing paths, near buildings and other areas where he can't get the jeep/plow close enough. Shoveling by hand is getting to be too hard for us Oldies. We are both looking forward to retiring to a place where someone else will be responsible for maintenance and upkeep.

He spent several hours out shoveling snow today so our cleaning girl could make it in. I shoveled the paths & porch...but not the deck. Willy got thoroughly stuck in the middle of the driveway circle. Still can't figure out how he got out there. The pickup pulled it out fairly easy.....after I waded snow more than knee deep to get the hauling strap hooked to the jeep bumper.

It has been a wonderful and peaceful Christmas.

That's all the news for now from the Far North.
