More Moose

Preceding the moose visitor of the previous post, we were visited by a big moose last Mayday. Being too tall to comfortably munch the tops from fiddle ferns sprouting in my front flower bed, she lowered herself to front knees....at which point I ran out the front door yelling. She calmly threw an annoyed look my way before ambling slowly on around the house.

I usually give a wide berth to moose. Was challenged once in my car when I started inching forward to get a mama and her baby to hurry up and cross the road in front of me. I could see when she turned to confront me in an aggressive stance that my car might not pass completely under the belly of that big mama - and if I just knocked the legs out from under her, she'd land in my front window - so decided I'd better allow them all the time they needed to cross over.

We had more moose around while living in our condo in Anchorage than we've had here in the Valley. They were always underfoot there - stopping traffic - climbing onto porches - etc. Here are some shots of a newborn on the lawn of an Anchorage house. Some morning joggers ran across her. The girl ran back home to get her camera - which took about 20 minutes. The Mama and baby were still there when she returned to get the shots labeled Anchorage Newborn. Baby was less than 2 hours old according to the lady who's lawn they were bedded in and had watched the birth.

Also in this file are some shots of a old bull moose who became a regular in downtown Anchorage for a couple of years. He made the news - dubbed Buzzwinkle - after he ate too many fermented crab apples and became drunk. He was dragging several strings of christmas lights dangling from in his antlers. Not much you can do to help a drunk moose except let him sober up.

  2. Wow, spectacular! Growing up in Southwestern Ontario the only moose I saw was on the plates of our hunting neighbours who headed north. When I finally got out to see the wild north, I was enthralled by every moose sighting. Driving across Canada when I was 21 we had our fair share of encounters, thank goodness we were young but not stupid and stayed out of their way, let them have the road when they wanted it and allowed them to enjoy their peace. Incredible creatures, thanks for the photos!

Thanks for stopping by my blog too, I hope you continue blogging, love seeing photos from different landscapes. Nice to "meet" you. :)
