Trick Or Treat

Our first snowfall covered the ground for our little Gouls & Goblins this year. I shoveled and salted a path to our front door....left the porch lite burning.....baked and decorated 2 dozen cupcakes (with chocolate backups)....and not a single Trick or Treater !! There have been fewer and fewer each year but this is the first time for a complete shutout. So sad. But was downtown for a pedicure earlier and there were approx. 8-10 costumed groups that stopped by the Nail Shoppe. My favorite were two little brothers dressed as the Lone Ranger & Tonto :-)

Cupcakes didn't go to waste. I ate one but decided that was too much sugar for me so dropped them off at the Boys & Girls Club on the way into town the next morning.

The day after Halloween, our house furnace bit the dust. Repairman said it was a broken housing (whatever that is) and was leaking soot and carbon monoxide so had to be replaced. Our Emergency Fund took a $5250 whollop!!...which followed another $2800 driveway pavement treatment as it was beginning to crumble some around the edges and the winter would have greatly hastened it's deterioration. Will take some time to save that much up again....but, with the economy so bad, and so many in worse shape, we are so very thankful to have an Emergency Fund for such maintenance. Just hope everything will hang together for awhile so we can build the Fund back up as we are now somewhat short in the Eight Month Emergency Fund recommended by Suze Orman.

Made another milestone....turned 68 yesterday. The new furnace was my birthday present :-)

Sitting here tonight waiting for our first forecasted blizzard which is suppose to start sometime today. So glad everything is done and necessary errands run so I can just sit and watch it blow One thing about blizzards, you have some warning (like with Hurricanes) so you can prepare for them ( unlike tornadoes or earthquakes). If power goes out and stays out for too long, we can always pack up Alice and move out to our old motorhome stored in the hanger, which has a generator vented to the outside and all the comforts of home inside.....almost ..... has no sewer hookup for the bathroom/shower/kitchen drain. That's on the To Do List for some future day.

That's all the news from the Far North for now.

  1. I must confess -- I would enjoy just a touch of snow. Or a day or two of 55 degree weather. It does not feel like fall when the high is 92.

  2. LOL, I remember that feeling, Steve, from when we lived in So. Cal. Had my Christmas mood ruined a few times by hearing neighbors mowing their lawns outside. Just didn't seem right.
For most of the winter, I love a fresh snow blowing thru. But am definitely ready for a change by April.
